6th Step
Six

If I'm ready for the Sixth Step, I should be
ready to have God begin removing my character
defects. So why am I still clinging to some of
them? Is it because I derive some sort fo
pleasure from them?
You betcha! Take revenge, for instance. I find myself daydreaming of ways to get even with the bozzos who complicate my life. Take pride, for example. I enjoy believing that I am never wrong. Yet these defects prevent me from living the kind of life that I want. They're a barricade to my being able to treat myself and others as I should.
There will be a big hole in my recovery until I am willing to forego the momentary pleasures that I get from my character defects and begin to give up my shortcomings. If I want recovery, I need to let go and let God.

Getting Ready
I know that I have character defects. I know the
pain and problems they have caused for me. The
Sixth Step will not rid me of these defects. It
only asks me to become ready. Am I ready?
Entirely ready? The answer must be, "Yes," if I
am to go forward in recovery. Entirely
ready is not conditional. I must be
completely committed to having God remove my
defects of character.
The slogan "Let God and Let God" is applicable to this Step. Letting go does not mean becoming passive or not continuing to learn and grow. It means giving up the struggle between my self-will and God's wishes for me and turning control of my life over to God.

Entirely Ready

The Sixth Step is a challenge to surrender to
God's guidance. My goal is to make myself
"entirely ready" to let go of the negative habits
that have troubled my life. God is already
"entirely ready" to accept my humble offering of
my faults and to help me change in ways that will
bring me healing.
The defects of chararcter that I want to be rid of are sure to have deep roots in me. My daily conscious cooperation will be needed as I accept God's help and let Him remove them from me. If I am willing, I will see His work in me, sometimes gradual, sometimes sudden, as He moves me from bondage to freedom.
